To stop odour, litter needs to entirely cover the poop and bury it. The best type of litter that acheives this is clumping sand, which also clumps urine without leaving behind wet or muddy litter.

Crystals are nice, however, some cats don't like the feel of them on their paws and often go on the floor next to the litter rather than in it.
But in the end, it's the cats choice, and whatever makes them happy makes us happy.
